Solids!

Well, still sort of liquidy, but different than breast milk, anyway.

Last Thursday, we had a five-month weight check for Logan, since he's so skinny. He's tracking along the 15th percentile (we had the actual weight wrong from the last visit). The pediatrician just wanted to make certain he was staying along that line and not dropping off, which he is not. He otherwise looked great, and she (and we) had no concerns.

But, she told us to go ahead and start giving him solids. He's been shoving his fingers and fist into his mouth at every opportunity, and when I'm holding him and eating or drinking, he watches with fascination. I took those to be encouraging signs that he'd be okay with the food.

So, yesterday, we gave him some organic brown rice cereal.

The box said to do one tablespoon of cereal for 4-5 tablespoons of milk, but I cut that in half, not wanting to waste breastmilk in case he completely rejected it. He did really well, enthusiastically grabbing and sucking at the spoon. It was definitely the messiest eating session we've had, and as noted, the "solid" rice cereal was more liquid than solid, but he did well.

I gave him some this morning as well: the full serving actually, thickening it up slightly from yesterday. Boy, did he go to town, totally loving everything about eating solid foods.

I'm going to go ahead and buy some formula to mix up with the cereal instead of breastmilk. He needs a source of iron, and formula has that. (Cereal does, too, but he's not eating nearly the daily recommended amount and probably won't for a while yet.) Since right now the solids are just supplemental, not his main food source, I'm not as heart broken at the idea of giving him formula.

Right now, we're waiting to see two things: one, if he has any allergies to the cereal (or formula) and two, how his poo will change. The golden age of non-smelly poo is about to close forever. Ah, well, it was fun while it lasted....I guess?
