Contagious!

My brother and Nate were down over Christmas. My brother, with love in his heart, shared a cold with me. Since I wasn't aware that he had given that gift, I went about my normal business until last week, I came home and noticed that no matter how much water I was drinking, my throat was sore.

Crap.

Sure enough, around midnight, I woke up with a throat that was on fire. Swallowing my own saliva hurt. All I could think about, though, was whether I'd infect Logan.

Of course, before I was having symptoms, the virus was working its evil. I was contagious before I knew it. When we're putting Logan down for the night, Mike says goodnight first, gives Logan a kiss on the forehead and says, "Look out for the Smooch Monster!" because I always come in saying, "Smooches!" where I proceed to smooch Logan all over the face and head.

So, the night or two before the sore throat, if I was going to give my boy the illness, I did it right then.

But, the secret weapon is breastfeeding. While it means he's in super close proximity to me (obviously) he's also getting the antibodies that I created for this specific virus.

Logan did get it. He's had a very slight cough for a few days. Yesterday, he had a few green, runny boogers (yay!) But, he's been sleeping and eating normally and hasn't had any boogs today. He's been a tad crankier than usual, but his top two teeth are coming in, and he's been chewing on his sleeves, so I think that's where the crank is coming from.

So, all in all, we've weathered Logan's first cold really, really well. Once he's weaned, though, and starts bringing home colds from day care (when he gets there), it won't be this easy.

  1. I'm pretty sure Allison lived on a steady drip of Children's Motrin for about a year of her life between 2 and 3...
